At Peregrine Senior Living at Orchard Park, we believe in celebrating life’s chapters by fostering independence, mobility, and a sense of joy among our residents. Staying active plays a vital role in this, and one often-overlooked area of wellness for seniors is foot health.

Your feet are the foundation of so many daily activities—walking, balancing, and even standing. Keeping them strong and flexible can significantly impact your overall mobility and confidence as you age. Five easy and effective foot exercises that can help maintain these abilities include:

  • Toe taps
  • Heel raises
  • Toe spreads
  • Rolling foot massages
  • Towel scrunches

Our amenities are designed to help your loved ones maintain their health, from head to toe, all while staying aligned with The Peregrine Way.

Toe Taps

Toe taps are deceptively simple, but they pack a punch when it comes to improving foot and ankle flexibility. To do this exercise, sit in a sturdy chair with your feet flat on the floor. Raise your toes while keeping your heels firmly planted, then lower them back down. Try doing this 20 times with each foot.

Why it helps: Toe taps strengthen the muscles along the front of your ankles and shins. This can reduce the risk of tripping and improve your ability to lift your feet while walking.

Heel Raises

This exercise focuses on enhancing balance and calf strength, which are crucial for steady walking. Stand while holding on to a countertop or chair back for support. Slowly raise your heels off the ground, balancing on the balls of your feet, then lower them back down. Repeat this motion 15 to 20 times.

Why it helps: Heel raises strengthen your calves and ankles, making it easier to take confident, steady steps.

Toe Spreads

Don’t underestimate the importance of toe flexibility—many activities rely on strong, nimble toes. For this exercise, sit comfortably and place your feet flat on the floor. Try to spread your toes apart as wide as you can, holding the position for a few seconds before releasing. If you find this tricky, try using your fingers to gently massage and stretch the toes.

Why it helps: By enhancing toe dexterity, this exercise improves balance and reduces the risk of falls

Rolling Foot Massage

This one feels less like exercise and more like self-care. Take a small ball (like a tennis or foam ball) and place it under your foot while seated. Carefully roll the ball under the arch of your foot, applying gentle pressure for about 2–3 minutes on each side.

Why it helps: This rolling motion not only eases tension but also improves circulation and strengthens the small muscles in your feet.

Towel Scrunches

Towel scrunches are a fun way to work on controlling and strengthening the muscles in your toes and arches. Place a small hand towel or washcloth flat on the floor in front of you. While seated, use your toes to scrunch up the towel toward you. Repeat this 5 to 10 times for each foot.

Why it helps: This exercise not only strengthens the arches of your feet but also encourages better coordination and muscle control.

The Bigger Picture of Wellbeing

While these exercises focus on foot health, their benefits extend far beyond that. They improve balance, reduce pain, and allow seniors to fully enjoy all the rich experiences offered by their golden years.

Supporting mobility through gentle, accessible activities is just one way we do this.
